About Me

Hello! Thanks for visiting.

My name is Rachel. I’m a newly minted Londoner, by way of New Zealand. My parents liked to move a lot when I was a kid, so I grew up in Indonesia and Hong Kong. In my adult life, I’ve lived in Texas, Melbourne and had a few stints back in New Zealand. I’m culturally confused as can be!

I am interested in all things cultural – race, gender, class and so forth. This fixation with understanding the emotional significance of culture has led to my current occupation: MA student in Cultural Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Broadly speaking, my research interests include constructions of race and nation, identity politics, Texan material culture and sense of place.

This website is my take on life. I write about travel, everyday culture and identity politics. I’m big on public engagement and looking beyond the ivory tower, so expect the odd academia-made-approachable piece as well.

When I’m not busy being a student/working part time to afford rent/on a train commuting, I enjoy country music, theatre and documentaries. I also have a weakness for novelty attractions and ‘Big Things’.
